The NFL’s 100th season is officially underway everyone! Green Bay took the victory over Chicago 10-3 where the defense was key. We saw some excellent debuts and some shaky offensive performances in tonight’s snooze fest. However, that is not to say there isn’t anything to be excited about from tonight. Check out some Week 1 player grades to see who shows promise and who needs to sort out some early-season problems.
Packers: WR Marquez Valdez-Scantling
Player Grade: B+
The Packers look like they got a true WR2 to play alongside Davante Adams. Valdez-Scantling was sensational tonight. He helped lead the offense to the games only touchdown on this beautiful 47-yard catch from Rodgers. He produced the most for Green Bay tonight recording 4 catches for 52 yards and 1 rush for 6 yards. While these aren’t eye-popping numbers, he is showing Aaron Rodgers that he is a reliable target. Green Bay was shut down by Chicago’s defense so his play brought some electricity to a fairly boring game.
MVS will look to build off his rookie season where he recorded 38 catches for 581 yards and 2 touchdowns. A fifth-round pick out of North Carolina State, MVS has a lot of hype this year, especially because of new HC Matt LaFleur. As the Packers offense moves in a new direction, Valdez-Scantling will look to have a huge role this year in a receiving corps deprived of weapons. His early play is showing that he can be reliable for not only tough catches but clutch moments. Marquez and the rest of Green Bay’s offense will look to catch fire in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Bears: QB Mitchell Trubisky
Player Grade: C-
Trubisky had a really rough night. Not all to his credit, however, as his offensive line was also horrendous. But the number of times Trubisky threw some really awful throws. He and the rest of Chicago’s offense had many troubles getting the moving. Trubisky had some poorly timed throws, which included an interception to former teammate Adrian Amos (and he’s lucky that was his only interception.) Even though the Packers defense was stifling, this was an unacceptable performance.
Trubisky, 25, is looking to improve off a really strong 2018 campaign. Despite some changes to the run game, Trubisky is getting mostly the same offense from last year. While one game is only one game, getting off to a rough start can mental damage any Quarterback. Trubisky will have to prove he can fight through this animosity throughout the season. Trubisky will have to go up against a very good Denver Broncos defense that could cause more problems for Chicago.
Bears: WR Allen Robinson
Player Grade: A
Allen Robinson balled out tonight. The only non-QB to have over 100 yards in tonight’s game, Robinson did his best to best the Bears offense on his back. His 7 catches for 107 yards is what Bears fans were expecting more of last season. With the performance in such a defensive game, Robinson is showing he belongs in the Windy City. Since neither Taylor Gabriel or Anthony Miller seem to be doing much, Trubisky will need to rely on Robinson more this season. Which means he needs to show up like this more often. Otherwise, Chicago’s offense will struggle severely.
Robinson was brought in by Chicago last year during free agency. He was apart of a total makeover to the Bears receiving corps that was very middling last season. Robinson seemed as though he didn’t fit, but it looks like he’s ready to change everyone’s mind this season. He will have to go up against Chris Harris Jr. and the rest of the stellar Broncos secondary in Week 2.
The Offensive Lines
Player Grades: D
While both defenses played amazing, I’m going to grade tonight’s protection on both sides. Spoiler, it isn’t pretty. Both teams gave up 5 sacks and created absolutely no holes for their run games. While it could just be Week 1 miscommunication, this is a very concerning issue. Trubisky had no time to throw and Rodgers was getting hit left and right. If either team hopes to have ANY chance to convert third downs and have consistent scoring drives, they need to fix this. They can’t have this kind of miscommunication next week because Minnesota and Denver have incredibly scary pass rushers and run stuffers. If they can get it together, both offenses will be incredibly successful going forward.
What’s Next?
Now that we’re done our first set of Week 1 player grades, let’s recap and review. With the season’s first game wrapped up, the new season is officaly undeway . We saw some poor offensive protection and some great plays from receivers with lots to prove this year. As mentioned, the Bears will need to fix almost everything offensively if they want any chance at getting past Denver’s defense next week. The Packers will look to ride this win into another divisional match-up against Minnesota’s fearsome defensive line that could give their offensive line even more troubles.
