NFL: Week Two Winners And Losers

Week two of the 2019 NFL season has wrapped up, and there are some big storylines. Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger went down with injuries. Sam Darnold will miss several weeks with mono. Antonio Brown played his first game with Tom Brady, and Pat Mahomes and Lamar Jackson continue to put up video game numbers. These are the week two winners and losers.

Winners

Aaron Jones: Aaron Jones has finally been freed! After being under utilized last season, Jones had a career high in rushing attempts, with 23. He managed 116 yards and a touchdown with those carries. Adding 34 yards on four receptions gave him 150 total yards on 27 touches. He should have no problem next week against the Denver Broncos, who just allowed 153 rushing yards to the Chicago Bears.

Mark Andrews: After pulling down eight receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown, Mark Andrews has shown he’s the go-to guy for Lamar Jackson. His size and athleticism makes him a miss match for any corner or linebacker. He should be very active next week against the Kansas City Chiefs, who had no answer for Oakland’s Darren Waller.

San Francisco 49ers Running Backs: It was to hard to pick just one of them, because all three were great. Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert, and Jeff Wilson combined for 238 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 35 attempts (6.8 YPC). They also had four receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. Next week they should continue where they left off as they play the Pittsburg Steelers, who just allowed 151 yards rushing to the Seattle Seahawks.

Demarcus Robinson: It wasn’t Sammy Watkins. It wasn’t Mecole Hardman. This time, it was Demarcus Robinson who exploded for the Kansas City Chiefs. Going for 172 yards and two touchdowns on just six receptions, the Oakland Raiders had no answers. The Chiefs have an explosive offense so don’t be surprised when one, two, or all three of those guys go off next week, as they host the Baltimore Ravens.

Honorable Mentions: Dalvin Cook, John Ross, Lamar Jackson, Kenny Golladay.

Losers

Mitchell Trubisky: Mitchell Trubisky, for the second straight week, was very bad. This week, he completed 16/27 passes for 120 yards and added eight yards on the ground. Although the Denver Broncos have a solid defense, Mitch will be under pressure to preform well next week. Luckily, the Washington Redskins have been generous to quarterbacks, allowing 582 yards and six touchdowns through two games.

Christian McCaffrey: Christian McCaffrey is one of the leagues most explosive players. Against Tampa Bay, it was a different story. The Buccaneers held him in check and were disruptive at the line of scrimmage. McCaffrey finished with 16 rushes for 37 yards and two catches for 16 yards. Look for a bounce back game, as they travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals.

Kirk Cousins: After throwing the ball only 10 times in week one, Kirk Cousins came out flat vs the Green Bay Packers. Cousins completed only 14 of his 32 pass attempts (43.8%). He finished with 230 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and two fumbles. Under pressure all night, Cousins had nowhere to go with the ball and could not make plays. Next week should be much easier, as the Oakland Raiders come to town.

Alvin Kamara: Alvin Kamara is another elite running back that just couldn’t find running room this week. Finishing with 45 yards on 13 carries is not what is expected from the All-Pro back. With Brees potentially going to miss a couple months, defenses will be able to focus on him a bit more. He has a tough matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, who allow only 57.5 rushing yards per game.

Honorable Mentions: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Cam Newton, Allen Robinson, George Kittle.
