Each week I will be featuring the top three performers among first time eligible players for the 2020 NHL draft. Along with the occasional honourable mention for other noteworthy accomplishments. Here are my three stars for the period from Saturday, November 23rd through Friday, November 29th.
1. Marco Rossi
Austrian-born Marco Rossi is a very underrated prospect for the 2020 NHL draft. Not only is he scoring at a prolific rate, but he leads the entire Ontario Hockey League in plus-minus with a +27 rating. Rossi is the main reason that the Ottawa 67’s are currently ranked seventh in the KIA CHL Top-10 Rankings.
The 67’s began their
week with a tight-checking 2-0 decision over the Mississauga Steelheads. Rossi
would factor in both of those goals, scoring the games opening goal and adding
the primary assist on the insurance marker.
The next contest, a wide-open 11-6 blowout of the Kingston Frontenacs, found Rossi front and center of the offensive explosion with three goals and three assists. Consequently, Rossi now has 44 points in 19 games and his 2.32 points per game are second in the OHL and tops among 2020 NHL draft-eligible players. Remarkably, only 12 of his points have come with the man advantage, which is a strong indication of his play at even-strength.
Rossi occupied the tenth position on the Overtime Heroics prospects writers November rankings for the 2020 NHL draft.
2. Alexander Holtz
After being held off the scoresheet for two SHL games, Alexander Holtz played a single game for the Djurgardens U20 club. He wasted very little time making his presence known. Six minutes into the game, he would add an even-strength goal. A powerplay marker would follow two minutes later, before closing out the period with a primary assist. In the second period, he would complete the hat-trick with a shorthanded tally. Holtz wasn’t done there, as he would strike for a fourth goal in the final frame to go along with an assist, to close out the game with six points in a 10-1 thrashing of Mora.
Holtz, the fourth-ranked prospect in our November ranking, showed how dominant of a player he can be in this contest. As a result of this strong single-game performance, Holtz earned the second star of the week honour.
3. Vsevolod Skotnikov
Russian netminder Vsevolod Skotnikov turned in two superb performances this past week for Krasnaya Armiya in MHL action. He turned aside 20 of 21 shots on Tuesday in a 6-1 victory versus Russkie Vityazi. Following that outing, Skotnikov would shutout Kapitan two days later, stopping all 26 shots he faced. His total for the week of 46 saves on 47 shots gave him a .979 save percentage for the week culminating in him earning the third star of the week.
In 19 starts this season, he has posted a 1.41 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage, thus showing why he is considered one of the top goaltenders available for the 2020 NHL draft. Skotnikov also had one start in the Russian VHL this season, which resulted in a shutout.
Honourable Mentions
Additionally, there were a few other exceptional goaltending feats this past week. Drew Commesso stopped all 28 shots in a 2-0 shutout victory over the Tri-City Storm, while Yaroslav Askarov turned aside 23 of 25 shots to earn his first KHL win. Nick Malik would stop 55 of 57 shots for Frydek-Mistek in the Chance Liga. However, his performance would come in a 2-0 loss.
A pair of top snipers that deserve mentioning this week are Veeti Miettinen and Alexis Lafreniére. Miettinen struck for five goals and two assists in three games. Lafreniére would likewise produce seven points. However, his points would come in four games, in which he scored twice and added five assists.
