Washington Redskins vs. Carolina Panthers Recap

The Washington Redskins outlasted Christian McCaffrey and the Carolina Panthers. Washington is coming off of their first home win of the season. The Carolina Panthers have lost three games in a row, after starting the season 5-3. The big news for Washington coming into this game is an injury. Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan will miss his first game this decade after 139 straight starts.

First Quarter

The Carolina Panthers open the game with play-action, completing their initial pass for 14 yards. Carolina follows that with a bootleg by quarterback Kyle Allen. Because of a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, the Carolina Panthers are in Redskin territory. Two quick passes to, MVP, candidate, Christian McCaffrey, and the Panthers are at the 22-yard line. Two consecutive touches from the Panthers running back and the Panthers are at the Redskins 6 yard line. The Carolina Panthers quarterback, Kyle Allen hits his wide receiver, Curtis Samuel for a touchdown. The Panthers take an early 7-0 lead. Christian McCaffrey contributes 38 of the 75 yards during the eight-play scoring drive.

The Washington Redskins open the game with a short run. The next play is a sack by Panthers safety, Eric Reid. Because of the sack, the Washington Redskins are unable to convert the long 3rd down and are forced to punt.

The Carolina Panthers take their second possession and quickly move down the field. Panther’s quarterback, Kyle Allen, hits Curtis Samuel over the middle for 33 yards. Three plays later, Carolina’s quarterback hits D.J. Moore for a 13 yards touchdown pass. The Carolina Panthers jump out to a 14-0 lead.

Derrius Guice is in for the Washington Redskins second possession. The Redskins young, talented, running back exploits the Panthers defense for a huge 60-yard run. However, the Redskins have to settle for a short field goal. Dustin Hopkins connects for the Redskins and the lead is now 14-3 in favor of Carolina.

The Washington Redskins defense finally gets some pressure on the Carolina Panthers quarterback. The Redskins force a punt as the first quarter ends.

Second Quarter

The Redskins open the quarter with Adrian Peterson running hard. Washington’s quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, connects on a couple of passes before the Panthers force another field goal. Dustin Hopkins connects on a 42-yard field goal, cutting the lead to eight.

The two teams exchange a pair of punts as the defenses stiffen. However, the Washington Redskins punter, Tress Way, pins the Panthers on the two-yard line. A great special teams play sets up the Redskins defense and they respond. Washington Redskin’s cornerback, Fabian Moreau, intercepts Kyle Allen and returns it to the half-yard line. Derrius Guice immediately plunges in for the score. Because the two-point conversion is no good, the Washington Redskins trail, 14-12.

The Carolina Panthers are unable to move the ball as the Redskins defense applies pressure on Kyle Allen. Washington Redskin lineman, Matt Ioannidis, records a sack and forces a punt.

Dwayne Haskins moves the ball down the field with a pass to wide receiver, Kelvin Harmon, for 26 yards. Dwayne Haskins also hits running back, Chris Thompson, for 13 yards. This is a rare appearance from Chris Thompson. He has missed most of the season due to injuries. The drive is stalled by the Panthers defense and a fumble recovery by Washington’s center Chase Roullier. The ensuing, 49, yard field goal is blocked by the Panthers as the half comes to an end. Washington trails, 14-12.

Third Quarter

The third quarter starts with hard runs by Washington’s, Adrian Peterson, for a first down. A nice catch by Washington receiver, Terry McLaurin, for another first continues the drive. A big completion from quarterback Dwayne Haskins to tight end Jeremy Sprinkle extends the drive on third down. Adrian Peterson bursts through the line for 22 yards, setting the Redskins up at the 13-yard line.

However, the Panthers’ defense rises to the occasion. Panther’s lineman Gerald McCoy sacks Dwayne Haskins, forcing another Redskins field goal. Dustin Hopkins, again, connects. The Washington Redskins have their first lead of the day, 15-14.

The teams exchange punts and Washington’s linebacker, Ryan Anderson is ejected from the game due to a helmet to helmet hit. The Panthers special teams pin the Washington Redskins at the one, but Adrian Peterson bust through the defense for a nice 21-yard game.

Unable to convert another first down, the Redskins punt. Tres Way, the NFL’s, leading punter, launches a 79-yard punt. The quarter ends with a short pass by Kyle Allen.

Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter starts with a sack by, newly acquired, linebacker, Nate Orchard. This is followed by a sack by Redskins defensive lineman, Matt Ioannidis; his second of the day. Because of the Redskins smothering defense, the Panthers have to punt.

Redskins quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, picks up a first down with his legs. Derrius Guice, with a punishing run, pushes the ball into Panther territory. A devastating stiff arm by Derrius Guice, allows the Redskins running back to bounce a run outside for a 37-yard run, setting up a first and goal on the one. Derrius Guice immediately soars over the line for the touchdown, giving the Redskin running back two for the day. Behind 22 unanswered points, the Redskins extend their lead to 8.

The Carolina Panthers’ next drive is snuffed out by the Redskins defense, as they record their sixth sack of the day.

The Washington Redskins, owning the line of scrimmage march right down the field. A smooth, 26-yard pass, from Dwayne Haskins to rookie receiver, Kelvin Harmon, sets the Redskins up deep in Panthers territory. Because the Washington Redskins manhandle the Panthers defense, Adrian Peterson burst through the line for a 12-yard touchdown run. The 29 points are a season-high by the Washington Redskins and extend their lead to 29-14.

Because they are behind by 15, the Carolina Panthers are forced to go into a hurry-up offense. Behind quick passes and effective scrambles by Kyle Allen, the Carolina Panthers move the ball down the field. Carolina’s quarterback, Kyle Allen, records his first rushing touchdown of the season as the Panthers close the gap to 29-21.

Final Stand

The Carolina Panthers convert the onside kick and quickly move the ball. A 21-yard pass from Kyle Allen to D.J. Moore sets up a first and goal. Two stuffs of running back Christian McCaffery and a pass break up by Quinton Dunbar leaves the Panthers with a fourth and goal. The game ends as Kyle Allen scrambles around in the backfield fumbling the ball. A goal-line stand gives the Washington Redskins back to back wins and their third win of the season.

Overall

The Carolina Panthers looked as though they were going to blow the Washington Redskins out after scoring on their first two possessions. However, the Washington Redskins bounced back from a 14 point deficit with strong defense and sustained offense, to build a 15 point lead of their own.

The Washington Redskins had a season-high 248 rushing yards and Dwayne Haskins didn’t have a turnover. The Redskins defense held league MVP candidate, Christian McCaffrey, in check. The Redskins defense also had one interception and one fumble recovery, to go along with seven sacks. It was a total team effort. And the young players for the Redskins, along with some gritty veterans, are showing signs of life and a willingness to play hard despite their record. This is officially a winning streak! HTTR!
