It was another rough week for the Washington Wizards. The team is 7-17 and currently on a four-game losing streak. The District is coming off a blowout loss in Memphis on Saturday night. While the team is just four games out of eighth place they face an uphill battle to turn things around.
Clippers complete season sweep
The Los Angeles Clippers dominated the Wizards at Staples Center in the first meeting 150-125. This time around things went the same. The Clippers downed The District 135-119. With both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George playing they had their way with the Wizards porous defense. Kawhi went for 34 points on 12-18 shooting with 11 rebounds while PG poured in 27 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Clippers shot 52% from the field and led by as many as 21 points on their way to the win.
Battle in the Queen City
Following the loss to LA, the Wizards had a nice opportunity in front of them. A matchup with the Charlotte Hornets which appeared to be a win the Wizards could secure. However, Devonte’ Graham had other ideas. The Hornets breakout guard led the way with 29 points and 6 assists to help pace the Hornets to a 114-107 victory. All five of the Hornets starters reached double figures.
Bradley Beal was held to just 16 points on 6-19 shooting however, sharpshooter Davis Bertans led the way for the Wizards with 32 points including a scorching 8-12 from three-point range. On a night with 20 lead changes and with the Wizards trailing by as many as 16 they just couldn’t pull things together at the end.
Another loss in Grind City
The Wizards faced yet another winnable game as they came to town to take on Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies. Saturday night featured a very common theme for the Wiz which was no defense. Rookie Brandon Clarke put up 25 points while Dillon Brooks led all Grizzlies players with 27 points. The shorthanded Wizards really didn’t stand a chance.
Beals 29 points and 10 rebounds were not enough. Memphis shot a blistering 57% from the field and led by as many as 24 points. This would be the Wizards’ fourth consecutive loss since their upset win over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Wizards also fell to 3-11 on the road.
The week ahead
The Wizards open the week with a trip to the Motor City to take on Derrick Rose and the Detroit Pistons. They will return home to face the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday before starting a four-game road trip which will see them make stops in Toronto on Friday and Philly on Saturday. The Wizards played the Pistons on November 4th and came away with a 115-99 win. The Wizards hope Isaiah Thomas can return from a five-game absence. What does this week hold for the District?
