Saint Mary’s @ Arizona State Game Recap

St Marys Recap: In what ended up being a one sided affair, Saint Mary’s demolished the Sun Devils 96-56 on Wednesday evening at Talking Stick Arena in Phoenix, AZ. As the score suggests, this game was never close and ended up with one of the craziest box scores you’ll probably ever see. Only three players scored for the Sun Devils, and of those three one player, Alonzo Verge, Jr, scored 43 of his team’s 56 points. His previous season high was 13 points.

Saint Mary’s was paced by Jordan Ford’s 34 point game, making this his second consecutive 30 point game. In fact, Ford started the game 8-8 including 5-5 from deep before going to the bench with an early two fouls. That wouldn’t stop Saint Mary’s however as they continued to pile on the points, and took a 51-19 lead into the half.

Domination

The second half was more of the same. Saint Mary’s continued
to shoot the ball at a ridiculous clip, and showed why they are the best
shooting team in the nation. The Gaels finished 16-26 from deep, a number that
will only further separate them as the best shooting college team to date.
Another great sign for the Gaels is Malik Fitts continues to impress, as he
finished with 20 Points and 8 Rebounds. The one-two punch of Ford and Fitts are
becoming one of the best scoring tandems in all of college basketball. If they
can continue to play at this level, the Gaels can compete with anyone in the
nation.

As mentioned in my game preview, whoever controlled the pace
in this game would win. Saint Mary’s did exactly that, not allowing the game to
speed up and give Arizona State easy buckets.
It also helped that Arizona State had no post presence all night, as
Romello White could not do a thing against Mathias Taas, and as such the Sun
Devils were forced to play mostly on the perimeter and settle for mid range
shots. The game ultimately came down to one team shooting the lights out, and
the other team not being able to buy a bucket. Saint Mary’s aren’t 40 points
better than the Sun Devils, but games like this show the country exactly what
Saint Mary’s is capable of offensively on any given night.

St Marys Recap: Up next the Gaels travel to San Francisco for a ‘neutral’ site game at the newly erected Chase Center. They will take on the Nevada Wolfpack as a part of the Al Attles Classic.
