5 teams that should trade for Marcus Morris Sr.

At age 30, Marcus Morris Sr. is having the best year of his career, for the Knicks. He could get dealt at the trade deadline, and here are five teams that should make a move for him.

5. Brooklyn Nets

Taurean Prince has underperformed so far this season, and the Nets are looking to make an upgrade at power forward. Marcus Morris would be an excellent pickup for this club as he is shooting the three-ball at a 43.8% clip on the season. With Kevin Durant likely out for the season, Morris would be a solid temporary replacement.

A combination of Prince, Garrett Temple, and 20-year-old Dzanan Musa would contractually be enough to get a deal done. However, for the Knicks to accept, Brooklyn would likely have to throw in a first-round pick. The Nets currently possess Philadelphia’s 2020 first-round pick.

4. Houston Rockets

There are several rumors that the Rockets may be looking to trade Clint Capela at the deadline. Is it possible they could use him to acquire Marcus Morris Sr.? Morris would fit the D’Antoni system perfectly because of his ability to shoot threes and is an upgrade to Danuel House Jr.

Realistically, a deal that sends Morris Sr. means Clint Capela is out of Houston. The Knicks may not keep Capela, so this trade would either be a three-team deal, or Capela would then get shipped out of New York by the Knicks in a separate transaction. Either way, this trade could be beneficial for both sides. Also, it’s worth noting Morris was originally drafted by the Rockets back in 2011.

3. Dallas Mavericks

As I mentioned in the Robert Covington trades piece, the Mavericks are looking for forwards who shoot three-ball. Morris would likely replace Dorian Finney-Smith in the starting lineup, which would knock Justin Jackson out of the rotation. That would be a significant upgrade for the Mavericks.

The issue with this deal is that the Mavericks can’t trade their first-round pick until 2025 due to the Stepien Rule. However, a combination of Jalen Brunson, second-round picks, and Courtney Lee’s 12.7M contract could be enough to get this deal done. From the Mavericks’ perspective, this deal is a no-brainer. For the Knicks, this one feels like a fall back option if the trade market doesn’t work out the way they want it to.

2. Miami Heat

While Meyers Leonard has been solid, the Heat should be looking to acquire a better forward who can shoot the three. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler have carried the Heat to a top spot in the East, but Morris Sr. would make them closer to being contenders.

The bigger question is if the Heat are willing to give up young players to get him. Miami can’t trade a first-round pick until 2025, and they only possess one second-round pick before 2026. I doubt the Heat are willing to give up Tyler Herro, and Duncan Robinson might not be enough for the Knicks to accept. Dion Waiters could be an intriguing piece of this deal for New York.

1. Los Angeles Clippers

Patrick Patterson and JaMychal Green have struggled as starters this season, leaving some empty minutes in the lineup until Montrezl Harrell comes off the bench. Getting Marcus Morris Sr. would help things and make the Clippers an even tougher threat come playoff time. Morris may eventually come off the bench with Harrell and Lou Williams

Throwing in Moe Harkless’ contract along with a young player in either Landry Shamet or Jerome Robinson with a first-round pick could be enough to get the job done. Shamet would be the most intriguing asset for the Knicks, given his ability to shoot as a second-year player. Florida State Rookie, Mfiondu Kabengele, could also be an option for the Knicks.
