Another Cornerback Coming Back to the Jets

Maulet started six games as the team’s second-choice corner, behind Brian Poole. That was before 2019 sixth-round pick Blessuan Austin came back from an injury in November.

He went undrafted out of Memphis in 2016 and joined the Jets for the 2019 campaign on a one-year deal. After the season’s conclusion, he became a restricted free agent and was non-tendered, allowing him to sign elsewhere. Despite that, the Jets are bringing him back to be a valuable depth piece.

Maulet put on impressive showing and participated in 12 games throughout 2019 – the same amount as previously in his career combined. The prospect of a full year of Austin as a starter seems promising but the Jets could still take a glance at the leftovers of the cornerback market. Maulet likely won’t compete for a bigger role but he can make the most of his opportunities.

The cornerback market is still full of talent. Logan Ryan, Xavier Rhodes, Prince Amukamara, and Ronald Darby, among others, are players that have proven themselves on a weekly basis. However, the Jets entered free agency looking for a player to lead the cornerback tandem and got back Brian Poole for another year. Therefore, it’s proving more likely for general manager Joe Douglas to address the pass-rush and pursue a Robby Anderson reunion.

Last year, he allowed just 28 completions from 42 pass attempts or 66.7 percent. In addition, he surrendered a scarce passer rating of 74.4 when in coverage.

The Jets still are set to decide whether to bring back lower-profile corner Darryl Roberts with his $2 million becoming guaranteed on Sunday.
