On Sunday afternoon the New England Patriots signed quarterback Brian Hoyer to a one-year deal. After another under-whelming pickup, the Patriots seem to have an interesting plan going forward.
Replacing Brady
Without the known star status of a quarterback, the Patriots knew that replacing Tom Brady wouldn’t be the easiest thing to do. What Bill Belichick and the Patriots did know is there plan after the Brady era.
While we’re not entirely sure of the long term plan at the position, we can understand the thought process of what the Patriots, Robert Kraft, and Bill Belichick will do at quarterback going forward.
With Cody Kessler, Jarrett Stidham and now Brian Hoyer as the three quarterbacks on the New England roster, it’s easy to see that Belichick doesn’t care about the flashy name as the leader of the team. The Patriots could’ve traded for former MVP Cam Newton, signed 2019 breakout Teddy Bridgewater, traded for former Bengal Andy Dalton, or even signed well-known former Buccaneer Jameis Winston. But that’s not how the Patriots operate.
Everyone Competes to be a Starter in New England
The culture in New England isn’t about who’s the flashiest player, it’s about who can get the job done. But what’s puzzling about the signing of Hoyer is the fact that the career backup QB is now on his third stint with the Patriots and likely will be given the chance at the starting job. Having everyone compete for a starting job, no matter who you are is one thing but handing over the reins to Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham is another.
Replacing arguably the best quarterback of all-time with a second-year quarterback with no experience in starting games and a career backup is quite puzzling for even the Patriots. However, if there’s one coach in the history of football to never doubt, it’s Bill Belichick.
The Plan
If Stidham is the number one, why bring in Hoyer? Mentoring would be the best answer as Hoyer knows the system, but at that point wouldn’t it make sense just to have Hoyer on the sideline as a coach?
One thing’s for certain, the Patriots have a plan. Getting the most out of Hoyer and Stidham to see if they can win now, or drafting a rookie in the upcoming draft, the plan is in place.
Could it be that the Patriots are just waiting around until a superstar quarterback like Deshaun Watson is available in 2021? New England is in fact, the betting favorite to sign Watson in 2021.
What if the Patriots are considering tanking for a phenom quarterback out of college like Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence? We may not know the full master plan right now, but you can bet any amount of money that the Patriots themselves do.
