What went wrong for the Chicago Bears in 2019? Let’s start with the most significant issue that the Bears have already begun to fix with the addition of quarterback Nick Foles. After watching the all 22 film of the 2019 Chicago Bears, the biggest problem was at quarterback.
What Went Wrong
Mitch Trubisky wasn’t the only problem, but that’s where it all begins. There are some things that he does well, but his inconsistencies aren’t something you can learn at the NFL level. You’re either a born leader/quarterback or your not. And sadly for the Chicago Bears, he’s more of an athlete than a quarterback.
He’s not the only problem though, Head Coach Matt Nagy and the offensive line deserve some of the blame as well. But first, let’s talk about the quarterback’s pros and cons.
Mitch Trubisky Pro’s
Mitch Trubisky does have some good qualities. Such as his mobility and his accuracy on short throws. His best passes usually come when he has a chance to throw in a perfect pocket with no one in front of him. But how often does that happen in today’s NFL? Not very often. But he is most comfortable when he roles out to his left or his right. It suits his abilities very well when he only has to worry about one side of the field. That’s the only time he can correctly read defenses.
Mitch Trubisky Con’s
Mitch Trubisky has lots of flaws in his game. Not being able to process information in real-time is going to be his most prominent reason for not making it in the NFL long term. It’s so frustrating to watch when he only looks at one receiver per play. He tells the defense where the ball is going immediately.
It looks as though he makes up his mind before every play that he’s going to throw to a particular route. Most of the time, it’s to Allen Robinson. Robinson is far and away, the most talented player on the offense, so it makes sense from that standpoint. But after watching the film, there are way too many instances of other players being wide open. Trubisky still throws it into triple coverage to Robinson. That has to make Head Coach Matt Nagy lose his mind.
Matt Nagy
Speaking of Head Coach Matt Nagy, he’s not the main problem, but he still has room to grow as a play-caller. I am giving Matt Nagy a little bit of a pass as of now because, as I said before, he’s calling plays that get people open. It’s just his quarterback can’t see them. That’s why this year is going to be huge for his resume, which is why I believe he brought in quarterback Nick Foles. He doesn’t want to go down with the Mitch Trubisky ship. And who could blame him?
But some things make me nervous about him being the long term answer at Head Coach. One of the main reasons is that he doesn’t like to run the ball, one bit! And running the ball for the Chicago Bears has always been super important. They call Chicago the windy city for a reason. But does he not like to run the ball or does he not believe in his offensive line to open up holes.
Offensive Line
Besides quarterback play, the offensive line is the biggest flaw for the Chicago Bears. It is not that they are all bad players, it’s bigger than that. They are decent pass blockers, but the run game is where they lack the most. Getting any push running the ball is non-existent. They are a collection of okay players with no speed or no one to strike fear in the defense. They are just a bunch of nice guys. That needs to change, mainly because they have a great defense that deserves an offensive drive to last longer than a couple of minutes. And heaven forbid a touchdown thrown in every once in a while.
A player like right tackle Isaiah Wilson from Georgia fits that to a tee. Also, the need to get a little faster is a priority to help with getting to the second line of defense. It will also help with the screen game, a staple of the Andy Reid offense. To help with that, the Bears should also be targeting center Nick Harris from Washington. To have an offensive line made up of Charles Leno, Cody Whitehair, Nick Harris, James Daniels, and Isaiah Wilson should make the Bears more likely to have a winning season.
