Boston fans have certainly seen their share of legacies. They range from Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, Tom Brady, David Ortiz and current champion Zdeno Chara. With Tom Brady departing for Tampa, Zdeno Chara remains the longest-tenured champion of Boston sports. In this post, we will examine what separates Zdeno Chara from other Boston greats.
Zdeno Chara, Boston’s Longest Tenured Champion
As it stands now, Chara has played in a total of 1,553 games. He has 205 career goals, along with 451 career assists for a total of 656 points. Chara is a familiar face in the penalty box totaling 1,956 minutes. Not to mention 23 career game-winning goals.
Chara’s biggest attributes are his presence in the locker room. Since his arrival in 2006 Chara has been the face of the Bruins franchise. In the Stanley Cup, for example, Chara played injured by wearing a brace that protected his broken jaw. When it comes to character the first name that Bruins fan thinks of is Zdeno Chara.
Heart And Soul of The Bruins Defense
At 43 years old, Chara is still a force on the ice. Part of the reason for Charlie McAvoy‘s success this season has to play with Zdeno Chara. Overall, the Bruins have a young group of defensemen. Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, Jeremy Lauzon, Steven Kampfer, and John Moore comprise the Bruins defense.
In 2011 Zdeno Chara was a vital reason that the team was Stanley Cup champions. The same was true for last season albeit they lost in seven games to St. Louis. Given his overall health condition, Chara still has some playing time left in him.
Where Chara Stands Amongst The Greatest Bruins Defenseman
When it comes to ranking Bruins greats Chara seems underrated. Many fans argue that he should retire. Year after year the argument lingers on but Chara is still a dynamic force on the ice. Since COVID-19 halted the season, Chara has played in 68 games this year. Compared to 62 total games lat year.
When it comes to comparing to other Bruins greats Chara is right up there. He is definitely in the same category as Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, and Eddie Shore. Depending on when the season picks up again Zdeno Chara will go down as one of the best.
The Season Ahead
Depending on the outcome of COVID-19, Chara still has some playing time left. If the season resumes shortly the Bruins are better with Zdeno Chara in the lineup than not in the lineup.
