Can Marcus Stroman Emerge in New York?

In exchange for two pitching prospects last year, the New York Mets traded for former Blue Jays ace, Marcus Stroman. Being named to his first All-Star appearance in 2019, the Mets are hoping for more of the same. And speaking of which, now is the best time ever to emerge. Mets flamethrower Noah Syndergaard has undergone Tommy John surgery and is unable to resume play until the summer of 2021. Jacob DeGrom is riding high, and now it’s Stroman’s chance to feed that flame to victory.

A Little on Last Year

Last season was a strong campaign for the young Marcus Stroman. His first All-Star appearance was deserved as Toronto dealt their star. His ERA with the Jays was 2.96 in what was a solid outing. As he signed with the Mets and finished up his season, Stroman’s ERA rounded out to just above 3 at 3.22.

The Blue Jays, as expected, topped the Baltimore Orioles. However, they couldn’t hang with the best in their division, containing the famous rivalry of the Red Sox and the Yankees, and the young team of the Rays. Toronto, however, has some extremely impressive young talent in their own organization. While Stroman was a huge part of the success, he was also a trade candidate.

Stroman’s Current Standing

With the 2020 season put on hold, you can only go with what we’ve got. For now, Stroman and his time with the Mets haven’t been the best. Despite this ruling, you can also argue a pass for Marcus considering his short time in the Big Apple. Syndergaard’s absence will only enhance the value of Stroman.

The starting pitching staff is running thin, and even after Stroman’s signing. Zack Wheeler, a solid starter that provided the Mets with great innings, was picked up by Philadelphia in free agency. This current staff is needing a strong number two option to go along with DeGrom. And, if you ask me, Stroman is the guy.

The Future Outlook

It’s prime time for Stroman to step up and settle in as he did with Toronto. With no Syndergaard, Wheeler out, and a roster with young talent, the Mets are still looking to compete. And to go along with the offensive stars of Alonso and J.D. Davis, the starters get the party started.

Marcus Stroman could be one or two things for the Mets, and it depends on this year. Suppose a great season is in order, New York solidifies him as the second option. If he performs subpar this season, you, once again, have Stroman as a potential trade candidate to be dealt.
