Mayweather’s Davis Vows to “Slap the Dog Crap” Out of “Little Kid” Garcia

Golden Boy’s 21-year-old Ryan “Kingry” Garcia is a star-in-the-making and, from the looks of things, he wants to make that rush towards full stardom sooner rather than later.

The brash, outspoken Los Angeles-based fighter, who is also a social media sensation, has been launching arrows at all of the top stars in his lightweight division. Most recently, he"s targeted WBA lightweight world champ, Gervonta Davis.

“I"m taking him the heck out…I got some crap for him…I"m chasing him down," Garcia said in an interview for FightHype.com, referring to the 25-year-old Davis. “I"m gonna get disrespectful with him– as respectfully as I can– to make this fight happen. I think he wants to cash out. That"s what he"s focused on… ‘Oh I"m gonna get seven figure now." Kudos to you..and after I beat your butt, I"m gonna get seven figures too and then keep on making seven figures.

To beef up the animosity even further, Garcia recently posted a skit on his YouTube channel, taking aim at Davis. Garcia portrayed Davis with a gut, overweight from the pandemic layoff. He also play-acted Davis taking a nap on the sofa, waking up in terror after dreaming of Garcia landing a left hook.

Obviously, Davis has not taken any of this well.

"Everything is all fun and games until I slap the dog crap out of this little kid," Davis said via social media.

All of this is very intriguing. A battle between two 20-something fighters at (or near) the top of their game is always good for the sport. And, of course, if there"s bad blood involved, it"s just all-around better for sales and for building interest.

But before people start saving money for Davis-Garcia tickets or making travel plans, realism needs to kick in. The Covid-19 crisis has put sports on hold and boxing is just starting to make some tentative steps forward when it comes to returning to business. When fights do start being made, we probably won"t see any star vs. star blockbusters.

If there are intentions to make Davis-Garcia, it will likely sit on the shelf for a while. Boxing people call this “marinating" a big fight. It"s, basically, putting a fight off to juice up the hype and create greater public demand.

There"s a huge “if," though, in making this fight. Garcia is promoted by Golden Boy and is a contract fighter with streaming service DAZN. Davis is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and is bound to TV deals with Fox and Showtime through Premier Boxing Champions. It will take a lot of business wrangling to make this bout happen.

CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, is tossing water on the fire before things even get all that heated.

“We’re focused on Leo [Santa Cruz] which is a much tougher fight," Ellerbe wrote on social media. “Besides, his trainer has said he’s not ready yet and I understand."

He also blasted Garcia"s worthiness of a title shot while responding to a fan"s question about whether Garcia represents a tougher fight for his client:

“What makes you think it’s a tougher fight?  Because of his tough talk, his vids on social, his opposition?"

However, dreamers can dream. And, in this case, fight fans can dream that all of this bluster and animosity may actually result in a fan-friendly battle.
