Browns superstar Myles Garrett is coming off a rollercoaster 2019 season. He started the year with the stated goal to be the defensive player of the year and lead the NFL in sacks. Myles was in the running for all of it until week 11 happened. The Browns just won their biggest game of the year against the rival Steelers, and then Garrett lost his temper doing the unthinkable.
Garrett, during a skirmish, grabbed Mason Rudolph of the Steelers helmet off and hit him over the head with it. The helmet incident came after Myles’s involvement in punching Delanie Walker after a play week one and hurting Jets quarterback Trevor Semien in week two with a late hit. By the end of 2019, most NFL fans saw Myles Garrett as a dirty player. Others felt the NFL should have suspended Garrett for good. One of the most charitable, friendly players off the field had now made the exact opposite reputation on it. 2020 is a big year for Garrett if he is to remove the stain of 2019 from his rep. Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods think Myles is working hard to do that.
Joe Woods on Myles Garrett Mindset

“I think Myles has the right mindset in terms of wanting to be MVP and all of that, but we just need him to be the best player for us that he can be, and whatever happens, happens,” Woods said in a conference call last week, via NFL.com. “Right now, I think he is in a good place.”
Woods later went on to say “Myles is focused on getting better. He is focused on being a good teammate. He has been in the meetings. Myles is trying to step up and take more of a leadership role. I definitely think he is moving in the right direction and has the right mindset.”
It is good to see that Myles seems to be in the right place, heading into 2020. The Browns will need their superstar to be just that this season if they want to take the next step. For Myles and the restoration of his reputation among fans, more will be needed. He will need to be smarter on the field and keep his emotions in check. Myles Garrett may not be a dirty player, but 2019 put him in that light. If he is to restore his reputation among NFL and some Browns fans, then 2020 is where it will all begin. Garrett has already started to do so by continuing to be charitable and friendly off the field. Now Garrett will have to show he can focus his competitive nature the right way on it.
