UFC 285: Cody Garbrandt Looks to Right The Wrongs Starting With Trevin Jones

MMA Fighting broke the news that Cody “No Love” Garbrandt (12-5) will be taking on Trevin 5 Star Jones (13-9). Cody Garbrandt has generated a mixed reaction from MMA fans but there is no doubting the important role he played in the 135 pound division. Being 1-5 in his last six has left No Love in a tough spot, with “5 Star” Trevin Jones (0-3 in his last three) looking to push Garbrandt out of the UFC. Can No Love break the skid?

UFC 285: Jones Presents Many Problems for “No Love”Supporters

Despite the record of Jones, MMA fans should not count out the problems Jones presents, especially to the Ohio Native. No doubt, Jones has ran into some buzz saws coming up short in his last three, but he has all the tools to get “No Love” to slip. The southpaw is a striker, ready to swang and bang with anyone.

This is something that has cost Garbrandt in the past, and “5 Star” has all the tools to make that happen again. Jones does strike slowly, landing about two significant strikes a minute, but looks to make them count. This is a make or break fight for Jones, as this would put him on a four fight skid, and most likely out of the UFC.

UFC 285: It’s Make or Break for Garbrandt

It’s no secret that the past few fights have not gone smoothly for the boxer, in Garbrandt. With the move to flyweight not going to plan the walls almost feel like they are closing in on the former champion. Even so, it’s hard to count someone like “No Love” out, he seems to find the button, being one of the hardest hitting bantamweights in the world.

Even with the great wins, sports is a “what have you done for me now” world, and Garbrandt has a lot to prove on this next outing. With many counting him out, a win could right the ship, and a loss could be catastrophic.

UFC 285: Match up and Implications

This is a tougher matchup to predict. “No Love” is a boxer by trade, but is able to wrestle. While he does only land about 30 percent of takedowns, that does not tell the full story of his wrestling ability, as he tends to use it in reverse, defending 83 percent of the time. “5 Star” has some issues with grappling, having trouble in his last bout with control time. That could spell a path to victory for Garbrandt, but it’s hard to say that’s what will happen.

It’s likely that we will see these fighters stand and bang, that’s what both guys like to do. If Garbrandt plays with Jones outside the pocket, or stays in the pocket recklessly, he could get slept badly by Jones.

It’s a clear make or break fight for both guys, a loss will spell the end for their UFC Careers, for the near future at least. When looking at Cody Garbrandt even a win could see him packing. He has made mention of looking at other promotions, and his contract gives the UFC another reason to show him the door. There are a lot of factors, from the outside looking in, that make this bout a must watch this Saturday.
