New York Jets Free Agency Overview

The New York Jets will head into their first free agency with new General Manager Joe Douglas. After a full season with the organization, there are many holes to fill on both sides of the ball and all eyes will be on Douglas to make a splash in the first couple days of free agency.

The Jets are looking at around $52 million in cap space as of March 13th. They should be able to land a few top free agents, as well as fill a few more needs through the draft to build upon their free-agent acquisitions.

Biggest Needs

The Jets need a new and improved offensive line to protect their franchise quarterback and this is a good free agency year for such. After cutting Trumaine Johnson, the Jets will definitely be in the market to replace Johnson at cornerback, who had a disappointing stint with the Jets. The Jets are also exploring their options at wide receiver. They all looking to resign Robby Anderson and potentially add some more depth through free agency and/or the draft. If they can’t retain Anderson, they’ll look to rebuild the wide receiver room around Jamison Crowder. Finally, their last big need is edge rusher. The Jets are continuously in the third of the league in sacks and what they’re missing in Gregg Williams’ defense is someone on the edge to get to the quarterback.

Offensive Line

The offensive line for the Jets is the biggest elephant in the room when it comes to team needs. The New York Jets Offensive Line ranked 31st in 2019. Brian Winters and/or Kelvin Beachum could be the only faces you’d recognize on the Jets’ front come 2020 if they get resigned. Everyone else from last year’s line won’t be anything more than back-up if any remain on the team. There are lots of players on the Jets radar in free agency and in the NFL Draft.

Potential Free Agency Targets:

Tackles:

Guards/Centers:

Wide Receiver

The Jets just recently added former first-round pick Josh Doctson to the wide receiver group. They are currently still in talks with Robby Anderson with hopes that they can get a deal done for him to remain in New York. If the Jets can’t retain Robby, they might look to the draft to land a top rookie in CeeDee Lamb or Jerry Jeudy. If not, aside from Amari Cooper, there aren’t many alpha wide receivers hitting the market. They could be looking at some cheaper options in the wide receiver market to compliment Robby, if they keep him, or a rookie they might add through the draft.

Potential Free Agency Targets:

Cornerback

The Jets have just let go of underwhelming corner, Trumaine Johnson, who signed a huge contract under former GM Mike McCagnan back in 2018. Brian Poole was brought in during last year’s free agency and rookie Blessuan Austin started to shine when asked to step up in his rookie season. Still, the Jets will need to add someone to the cornerback room to replace Trumaine Johnson on the outside.

Potential Free Agency Targets:

Edge Rusher

It seems like year after year, the Jets invest in interior defensive line and it has yet to pay off. This is the year the Jets must go after an edge rusher to be the icing on the cake of this new Gregg Williams defense. Only 2 players on the Jets had over 3 sacks last year and neither had more than eight. (Jordan Jenkins – eight, Jamal Adams – 6.5)
