Budget Costs Are Hurting the Rams Defense

Budgets on two franchise players

The quarterback of the LA Rams, Jared Goff, is making insane money due to market value on the rise for quarterbacks. He recently signed a four-year extension worth 134 million dollars. The guarantee at the signing was 57 million dollars, which 110 million dollars was the total guarantee. He will be signed through 2024, but they will have a potential out by 2023.

On the defensive side of the ball, Aaron Donald is the highest-paid defensive lineman. He signed a lucrative six-year extension worth 135 million dollars in 2018. This contract has a 50 million dollar guarantee at signing, which leads to a total guarantee of 86 million dollars. Donald will be a free agent in 2025.

What is the conclusion? Budget cuts

There is a huge list of players that are being lost this offseason which is due to the expense of just two players.

The Rams lost Corey Littleton due to free agency. The Raiders signed him for three years worth 36 million dollars. He was the anchor of the linebacker core, which is now diminished.

Edge rusher Dante Fowler is no longer with the team due to no cap space. Fowler signed a three year deal with the Atlanta Falcons worth 48 million dollars. He was lost due to bad judgment deals.

Defensive tackle Michael Brockers was a bad judgment call because he was a must sign. The Baltimore Ravens reached an agreement to pay him 30 million dollars over three seasons. That was a contract that should have been done due to keeping stability on the defensive line.

Trickling down

This is now starting to take an effect on contracted players. The Rams announced that two offensive weapons will be on the trade block due to bad contracts. Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks will be on the block but at this point will not get cut.
