30 Days of MLB Rankings: Top Ten Right Fielders

Ladies and Gentlemen: 30 days, 30 MLB position rankings. Nine positions and the top starting pitcher ranked from each team in three parts each. Each player on the list is based on the projected starter for a team for the 2020 season by position. On day twenty-four of this series, we’ll look at the top ten right fielders in MLB.

Check out my previous rankings from this series:

Catchers 30-21 | Catchers 20-11  | Catchers 10-1  | First Base 30-21 | First Basemen 20-11 | First Basemen 10-1 | Second Basemen 30-21 | Second Basemen 20-11 | Second Basemen 10-1 | Third Basemen 30-21 | Third Basemen 20-11 | Third Basemen 10-1 | Shortstop 30-21 | Shortstops 20-11 | Shortstop 10-1  | Left Field 30-21 | Left Field 20-11 | Left Field 10-1  | Center Field 30-21 | Center Field 20-11  | Center Field 10-1  | Right Field 30-21 | Right Field 20-11

10. Nicholas Castellanos, Cincinnati Reds

2019: 151 games, .289/.337/.525 splits, .863 OPS, 27 Home Runs, 73 RBIs

After a great year with the Tigers and Cubs in 2019, Nicholas Castellanos signed a 4 yr 64M deal with Cincinnati. His biggest strength is his power as he crushed 27 home runs last year while knocking in 73 runners. He struggles to perform well in the field, having posted an Rdrs of -9 in 2019. With the DH likely coming to the NL, Castellanos may occupy that spot for the Reds.

9. Michael Conforto, New York Mets

2019: 151 games, .257/.363/.494 splits, .856 OPS, 33 Home Runs, 92 RBIs

A great two-way player, Michael Conforto had a great year in 2019, posting career-highs across the board. At the plate, he has a lot of power, having hit 33 home runs in 2019. He also does a great job at drawing walks but struggles with strikeouts. Defensively, he has a great arm. However, he isn’t speedy, and therefore doesn’t have a great amount of range in right field.

8. Joey Gallo, Texas Rangers

2019: 70 games, .253/.389/.598 splits, .986 OPS, 22 Home Runs, 49 RBIs

Throughout his career, Joey Gallo had been known for hitting a ton of home runs, while barely hitting above the Mendoza line. That was no longer the case in 2019 as he hit .253 in the 70 games he played. Unfortunately, he was riddled with injuries, missing over half the season. In the field, he has an absolute cannon and is one of the best in MLB at throwing out runners.

7. Charlie Blackmon, Colorado Rockies

2019: 140 games, .314/.364/.576 splits, .940 OPS, 32 Home Runs, 86 RBIs

At age 32, Charlie Blackmon showed no signs of slowing down, earning an all-star nod at right field for the third consecutive year. Blackmon has always hit for a high average and provided a lot of power at the plate last season. The area of his game that needs work is his glove. He doesn’t have a great arm; however, he may move to DH for this season, which will help the Rockies.

6. Austin Meadows, Tampa Bay Rays

2019: 138 games, .291/.364/.558/, splits, .922 OPS, 33 Home Runs, 89 RBIs

At age 24, Austin Meadows came out of nowhere with a breakout season in 2019, earning his first all-star nod. Meadows flashes a lot of power from the left side of the plate, while also providing some speed on the base paths. His defense is where he needs to improve. After the Rays signed Japanese sensation, Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, Meadows won’t be able to DH in 2020.

5. Max Kepler, Minnesota Twins

2019: 134 games, .252/.336/.519 splits, .855 OPS, 36 Home Runs, 90 RBIs

Heading into his age 27 season, Max Kepler remains one of the most underrated players in MLB. While he doesn’t hit for a high average, Kepler has a lot of power, hitting 36 home runs in 2019. Defensively, he provides great range and also has an above-average arm. Kepler should be on your radar as an MLB fan because he’s one of the best right fielders in the league.

T3. Aaron Judge, New York Yankees

2019: 102 games, .272/.381/.540 splits, .921 OPS, 27 Home Runs, 55 RBIs

Keep in mind, Aaron Judge may not plate in 2020 even if the season returns, as he is recovering from a rib injury. Picking between Judge and Harper was extremely tough as both are great five-tool players. Ultimately, I decided to have them tied at the third spot. Judge has battled injuries the past two seasons but is still a great power hitter. Defensively, he’s elite as he has one of the best arms in MLB.

T3. Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies

2019: 157 games, .260/.372/.510 splits, .882 OPS, 35 Home Runs, 114 RBIs

The narrative that Bryce Harper is overrated is very flawed. After signing a massive 13 yr 330M contract, Harper had a solid year in 2019. Fans have to factor in that Harper was under a ton of pressure after signing that deal, and he struggled at the start of the season. However, once he settled in, Harper had a great year, hitting 35 home runs and knocking in 114 runs. He was also a much-improved defender, improving 25 points in Rdrs from 2018 in right field.

2. Ronald Acuna Jr., Atlanta Braves

2019: 156 games, .280/.365/.518 .883 OPS, 41 Home Runs, 101 RBIs

As a Phillies fan, I hate that Ronald Acuna Jr. is likely going to destroy my team for a long time. As a fan of MLB, I absolutely love everything about Acuna’s game. He has one of the smoothest swings in MLB, hitting 41 home runs while earning his first all-star nod. While he’s far from an elite defender, he’s still above-average. Incredibly, he’s only 21, and Acuna Jr. should be one of the best players in MLB for several years to come.

1. Mookie Betts, Los Angeles Dodgers

2019: 150 games, .295/.391/.524 splits, .915 OPS, 29 Home Runs, 80 RBIs

While he wasn’t an MVP candidate like he was in 2018, Mookie Betts still had a great year in 2019. With Betts expected to leave in free agency after this season, the Red Sox traded him away to the Dodgers. Betts is an ideal leadoff hitter, as he does a great job at getting on base while providing a lot of power. Defensively, he’s one of the best in MLB as he earned his fourth consecutive gold glove while playing in the difficult Fenway Park right field. It will be interesting to see how he performs with his new team in 2020.
