UFC 292 Adds Geoff Neal vs. Ian Garry

A ‘new’ matchup has just been announced for UFC 292 on August 19th, as welterweights- Ian “The Future” Garry (12-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) and perennial contender- Geoff “Handz of Steel” Neal (15-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) will throw down in Boston. Garry initially shared the news via. his socials earlier today and the matchup was later confirmed to be in the works.

The number 13 ranked welterweight has made a statement in the promotion, Garry joined the UFC in November of 2021 at UFC 268, and since then Garry has gone on to win all five of his UFC fights in rapid succession defeating, Jordan Williams, Darian Weeks, Gabriel Green, Kenan Song, and most recently Daniel Rodriguez via. KO/TKO last month. Garry won his five fights with the promotion in a span of a year and a half, active and successful during that time frame. Of Garry’s 12 wins, seven have come by KO/TKO and one by submission.

This matchup is a big step up in competition for the undefeated Irishman- Garry as he’s never previously faced a top-ranked welterweight. Geoff Neal is the number eight ranked welterweight and is currently 2-3 in his last five contests. Neal made his debut for the UFC in February 2018, winning his first five fights in the promotion before falling to Stephen Thompson and Neil Magny. Neal responded to his two-fight skid by defeating Santiago Ponzinibbio and Vicente Luque before most recently fighting at UFC 285 in March this year against Shavkat Rakhmonov, Neal lost that contest via. third-round submission.
