The Rockies Rule 5 Draft included looking to find some pitching help during the draft yesterday. With the seventh overall pick, they selected Jordan Sheffield, a right-handed pitcher from the Dodgers organization. We will talk about the seventh overall pick and also the outfielder that the Rockies lost to the Giants.
Jordan Sheffield: Rockies Rule 5 Draft Pick
Jordan Sheffield is a 25-year-old pitcher that was drafted in the first round of the 2016 Draft. He played college ball at Vanderbilt and is the younger brother of Seattle Mariners pitcher Justus Sheffield.
Colorado wanted to take Sheffield because of his triple-digit speed on his fastball and high amount of strikeouts. With that he also comes with a lot of walks and his lack of control. In the minors, Sheffield has 4 years of experience and carries a 4.56 ERA in 99 games. He also has 240 strikeouts, a 1.514 WHIP, and 128 walks in 211.3 innings.
Jordan Sheffield will hopefully team up with Carlos Estevez with a strong fastball player that gets strikeouts. If they can help Sheffield get more control over his pitches I can see this pickup really helping the Rockies and give them new life in their weak bullpen.
Rockies Rule 5 Draft: Team Loses Outfielder
The Colorado Rockies have also lost a player in the Draft. Outfielder Vince Fernandez was drafted by the Giants. Fernandez was a 10th rounder in 2016, from UC Riverside. Fernandez was a .257 hitter with 15 home runs in 74 games in AA Hartford.
The Rockies hopefully helped themselves out with their bullpen situation. They do lose an outfielder in the Draft but the main concern that they need to focus on is the pitching. We will see if Jordan Sheffield can hold up to this pick and control his pitches. If he can, this could be a good start to rebuilding this team.
