Nunes vs. Pena 3 Set To Go Down in Vancouver at UFC 289

The UFC returns to the Great White North, Canada this year. Initial reports were that the UFC would return to Canada by having its next event in Calgary, Alberta, instead, the leading promotion in MMA announced today that they would be returning to Vancouver, British Columbia for UFC 289.

The PPV event is set to take place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on June 10th. Ironically, the last event held by the UFC in Canada was in the same Vancouver arena on September 14th, 2019 for UFC Fight Night 158 when Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje faced off against the recent UFC Hall of Fame inductee- Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Gaethje defeated Cerrone by TKO in the very first round.

The Trilogy Headlines UFC 289

As for the main event of UFC 289, UFC president Dana White announced to Aaron Bronsteter of TSN that it will be Amanda “Lioness” Nunes defending her bantamweight title against Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Pena in their trilogy bout.

The pair’s first fight- UFC 269 on December 11th, 2021 shocked fans worldwide, as Pena upset the champ and consensus greatest women’s fighter of all time- Nunes by a second-round rear-naked choke. Both fighters last competed on July 30th, 2022 at UFC 277 in the rematch of their first fight where Nunes recaptured her crown by defeating Pena by a rather dominant Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-43, and 50-44). This will be their third consecutive fight in a nearly two-year span.
